OMG -- that's $10 a day for meds! I think it's ridiculous that we are encouraged to take meds for ADHD and are then denied them because of price or availability. Shame on the insurance companies for doing this! And they will certainly consider ADHD preexisting...we've had it since BIRTH

Do you really think so? I'd think that would be more the black market drugs instead of regular prescription. Maybe not, though...

You don't want my story....I'm livid about it because my husband's employer just switched medical and pharma suppliers for its insurance, and first month out, we are having problems getting the methylphenidate filled generically. Now, they will penalize us for buying the brand name....so we pay premiums for the discounted mail order and even want the generic, but No, we can't get it, so we get penalized ($99 penalty on a 90 day order that should have cost $18). We are paying for something we were promised but not getting. Taking it to the employer and then maybe the media. I personally thinkthat the companies who own the generic manufacturers are the brand owners so that when the generic is unavailable, they get to pocket the higher fees for the brand....and there is probably a kickback to the insurance companies for having "penalty clauses" in their plans.

Lost my insurance last summer when my husband retired but had two months to be assured acceptance for individual insurance. (My husband has EVERYTHING covered by the Veterans Administration now). Even with a $10,000 deductible monthly premiums for me alone would be around $500. Not realizing what even generic Adderall costs, I did not accept this and opted for insurance that covers only after $5000 and not for ADHD prescriptions. Then I found out that a 90 day prescription for 40mg of Adderal XR daily would be $861! I looked at other options but found that my pharmacist couldn't get generic Adderall IR or Dexedrine. Ritalin is not a good match for me. I went several months without medication. It was awful with "Life is not worth living" thoughts frequenting my thought landscape. We bit the bullet and got a 90 day supply for $861 but we can't do that for long. I've tried other ins. companies but if you have even the slightest "precondition" you're denied. It's just not worth all the effort it takes to apply. I'm hoping generic Adderall IR is available soon and is affordable but it still won't work as well as XR. Didn't realize how fortunate I was to have insurance coverage all my life until last summer!

You brought me to tears, Mary. And those tears are what flush out the sadness and the "why now? why him" unspeakable unfairness of death. Like the Carl Sandburg poem, I think it's death that "creeps in on little cat paws" instead of fog. Blessings to you both/all as you witness the biggest transition of them all. And even our ADD won't hold us back from this one. Much love.

My brother is dying and I get to tag along on one last journey, asking questions that I would not dare ask anyone else. I ask my big brother these things now because when it is my turn he won't be here to tell me what to do next. The phone connection will be dead and he will be too.

I won't get to ask him if he was afraid (not yet) or if he was angry (no some things we can't control) any regrets (leaving his wife, sister (me) and grand daughter so abruptly).

Did he need to right any wrongs (one, not asking his high school girlfriend to senior prom because he didn't know how to dance, he apologized after 50 years), did he live up to his expectations (yes he became an industrial engineer with only a high school education), what unfinished business does he have (final yard sale so his wife won't have to deal with his things alone).

Does it hurt (not yet, they have such good drugs now). Does he believe in heaven (read the Bible in 2 weeks, it's better to believe than not) and what will he do when he gets there (will they let me grow hostas and drink beer?). What will he leave behind (personal letters and hand made jewelry came in the mail).

I can only go so far, I can only empathize so much and the tough things have to be done alone. I asked him to visit me in my dreams sometime and to come and hold my hand when it's my turn - like he did on my first day of school.

Hello Desperate,
I am sorry to here that you are having such a hard go of it. May I ask have you had a conversation with your doctor about this? I am currious to hear there thoughts and what assistance they offered you. I know thare are many different alternitives that may get you by untill this has passed ( I was told this may resolve by the begining of the year. I do not know if that means January or April).
From my understanding this has to do with the DEA and what the projections of the amount of medications would be sold for the year and what the reality was sold. So the projection was off and the DEA will not allow more to be sold since this is a controled medication. So hopefully new projections were submitted and we all can move forward come the begining of the year. Hopefuly it will be that easy!
So as I was asking is there potential that your Doctor may perscribe something that your insurance will approve to get you by?
