F.ree Succeed with ADHD summit starts Monday!

Great news for all of you! Twelve hours of interviews with world experts on ADHD next week and they are absolutely F.R.EE!

It’s the very first "Succeed with ADHD Web Summit" (http://tiny NULL.cc NULL.adhdsummit)and I am honored to be an invited speaker. I was even more humbled when I saw others on the speaker list included such ADHD luminaries as Kate Kelly (who wrote the book "You Mean I’m Not Lazy, Crazy, or Stupid?"), David Giwerc (founder of the ADHD Coaching Academy) and Nancy Ratey, MCC (author, coach and ADHD celeb).

It all starts MONDAY at noon; Just register and you can listen live to two interviews each day (one at noon, one at 9 pm Eastern time) and if you miss your favorite, you can listen to the recording afterwards, also for fr.e.e.

My session "Confessions of an ADDiva" will be live at noon on Thursday July 28th when I will talk about the success track for midlife women with ADHD.

Wanna attend? Just register…here’s the link

It’s DONE. I DID it! Finished the book!

All those long worrisome nights are gone!

The sun shines brightly even when it’s raining!

And "Confessions of an ADDiva: Midlife in the non-linear lane" is DONE!
Yes, my dear ADDiva friends, I have finally finished my dream book and I think you will love it as much as I do.

I wrote it in simple ADDiva-friendly style — not too many words on a page, lots of illustrations by my good friend Wendy and TONS of information about living with ADD as a mid-life adult woman.

If you’re not quite "mid-life" yet, no worries – all the info applies to you, too. And if you ARE 40-or-better, you’ll appreciate the emphasis on the change of life and hormonal influences on ADD.

I am SO proud of myself. Yes, I am actually allowing myself to bask in the glow of completion – just like my postcard says (did you get that postcard yet? here’s the link to it so you can see it again Completion postcard (http://lindaroggli NULL.com/lrimg/cards/pc-completion NULL.jpg).

But wait! You don’t want a postcard? You want the BOOK??

Well, pre-order it RIGHT HERE! I am making final proofing corrections tomorrow and then it will be available to EVERYONE.

Here’s a little secret: I actually printed 25 copies before I did final corrections. They aren’t perfect – perfecting IMPERFECT to be frank (there is a spelling error and several formatting snafus) but if you want one of the first first first run books, drop me an email and I’ll autograph it for you – bargain price of only $16 (normal price is $19).

And the book will soon be on Kindle AND available as an audio book. Whew. I have been working my butt off (except that I have been sitting on my butt and now it needs a little exercise!).

Gotta run…recording the first five chapters today

Hugs and love

Emotion and ADHD ala Russell Barkley

Last night was the Triangle Adult ADHD Meetup and I played portions of Dr. Russell Barkley’s CHADD keynote about emotion and ADHD. It was well received, even though some of his assertions are still controversial and unproven.

You can catch a snippet of the idea here:

www.youtube.com/watch (httpv://www NULL.youtube NULL.com/watch?v=7cw8jHUkHiA)

Bottom line is that Barkley now believes that emotion is a key component of ADHD. He has convincing arguments that our ADHD emotions are NORMAL emotions but because of the faulty control mechanism in our pre-frontal lobe, we can’t regulate those emotions. He is adamant that many (not all) of the conditions that are "co-morbid" (co-exist) with ADHD are misdiagnosed. He talks about "bottom up" inappropriate emotions that manifest in conditions such as bipolar disorder and sometimes depression but in his opinion ADHD is a TOP DOWN emotions issue. The emotions are normal not pathologized. He also pointed out some obvious but potent reminders that negative emotions play a major role in ADHD ("people can forgive your happiness, but they can’t forgive your hostility"). In particular, he says relationships suffer, driving (especially road rage), drinking while driving, car crashes (but not speeding surprisingly) and employment suffer, too. Just wanted to give you a heads up…emotion is a key word for ADHD this year. Expect to hear more.

Writing with a handicap?

OK, I have a Confession about “Confessions of an ADDiva,” the book I am determined to finish before I leave the beach a week from tomorrow.

I slid on the slick hardwood floors of the beach house and …broke my elbow! Are you KIDDING ME? I broke my ELBOW???

I was trying so hard to avoid hitting my hip that I came down on my wrist which then transferred the weight to my elbow and …ouch! Went to the Urgent Care on Emerald Isle and they x-rayed it. Not too bad, but it sure did swell. It happened last Friday and today is the first day I have been able to take off my rings (thank goodness it was my left hand because I am a rightie).

Ah, the challenges of writing a book. That which does not destroy us, makes us stronger!

“Focus Factor” on sale til 2/28/11

Hie thee to Costco (http://http//www NULL.costco NULL.com/Browse/Product NULL.aspx?Prodid=11507373&search=FOCUS%20FACTOR&topnav=&Mo=0&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode%20matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=FOCUS%20FACTOR&Ntt=FOCUS%20FACTOR&No=0&Nty=1&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial) this month if you want to save some money on “Focus Factor, (http://www NULL.focusfactor NULL.com/?gclid=CMTc9My5nKcCFSVe7AodOGANbA)” a supplement that is supposed to  help attention and focus. Normally the price for 150 tablets is about $50 in drugstores but at Costco this month the price is $18 and some change. AND with a Costco coupon, you save an additional $4 per bottle! That means you can buy three bottles for less than the price of ONE bottle retail.

I’ve been taking “Focus Factor” since I went off my Adderall about 9 months ago. I struggled for months,  so I tried the generic knockoff of it (no longer manufactured) and found that it made me calmer and perhaps a little more focused. That’s good enough for me. After all, it’s just vitamins and I can always use a few more of those in my body.

You are supposed to take 4 pills a day, every day! That’s a bunch of money! So I was SO happy to see it at Costco (http://http://www NULL.costco NULL.com/Browse/Product NULL.aspx?Prodid=11507373&search=FOCUS%20FACTOR&topnav=&Mo=0&cm_re=1_en-_-Top_Left_Nav-_-Top_search&lang=en-US&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&N=5000043&whse=BC&Dx=mode%20matchallpartial&Ntk=Text_Search&Dr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ne=4000000&D=FOCUS%20FACTOR&Ntt=FOCUS%20FACTOR&No=0&Nty=1&Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial) AND with the coupon, too (you can order it online without the coupon – but you do need a Costco membership).  The limit is four bottles, so I bought my limit and put three of them in the freezer for later.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Hugs

Linda

PS I am also taking 3000 units of fish oil as recommended by my psychiatrist — Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega (http://www NULL.nordicnaturals NULL.com/en/Products/Product_Details/98/?ProdID=1428)which has extra potent strength. I take them with food (it’s an oil and needs food to be absorbed easily). Oh, and I keep them in the freezer, too (that’s what reminded me to tell you this!)

Exercise. Finally.

I don't know about you, but I am a bit commitment phobic – especially when it means announcing my commitment to people who live outside my body (that's you and everyone else in the world!).

Why? Because I am leery of failing, falling short of my intended goal. And if I am gonna fail (which I do regularly, sorry to say), I'd rather do it privately. If nobody else knows what I attempted, then no one is the wiser that I tried (again) and fell short (again). I hate the cycle, but there it is.

So I am nervously announcing to all of you that I have gone back to exercise. Finally. At last. Whew.

There isn't a single thing that isn't improved by exercise: memory, focus, heart, lungs, muscle tone, longevity….I could go on and on. But for the last 6-7 years I have KNOWN the benefits but haven't EXPERIENCED the benefits. Lots of excuses: I'll do it next week. No time. No place to go. The basement/exercise room is under construction. I don't have the right shoes. No time. I need different shorts. I need a treadmill or elliptical or weights or video. No time.

And gradually, I have chipped away at the excuses. I have a treadmill. I even have an elliptical. And weights. And videos. But I still had trouble getting myself IN THERE to work out.

FInally (as in last October) something snapped and I called a low profile gym that about 10 minutes from my house. I had been pointed toward a personal trainer named Patrick who was supposed to be terrific. He invited me to come in that day. So I did. And I signed up. And I started going to the gym.

Did you hear that? I STARTED GOING TO THE GYM!!!

Mostly because Patrick was waiting for me and expected me to show up (gotta love that accountability!). But heck, I don't care what got me there. I was going!

And I am still going. Well, not since I got to the beach three weeks ago. I did bring some weights and an intention to join the local gym on a week by week basis (I didn't). I did promise to text Patrick to let him know what was going on with my workouts (not yet though). But yesterday, I got up, put on a video and WORKED OUT!

My whole day was better. I was more energetic, more optimistic and more eager to WRITE.

So, there is it. My intentions are exposed. I want to get back into shape…never the shape I was before the docs stole my estrogen patches. But at least in as good a shape as possible for an almost 59-year-old. (OMG that sounds so OLD…ick).

Off to the exercise room…I am going to burn those little fat cells to death!

Finishing my book

I am writing.

Well, I am charged with writing my book, but instead I am writing a blog post.

We are at the beach and it's a gorgeous morning (after a series of awful, cold, windy and rainy mornings). "We" refers to me and the two Shelties that are doing a good job of distracting me from writing. Milli and Boomer are here because I knew I would worry about them if they were home. But they sure require a lot of my precious attention.

They are out wandering on the deck right now. I'm at the beach house that will be occupied by the ADDiva retreat women in October, I am living in it so I will know how we can best use it for the retreat. Already I am envisioning yoga at sunrise and meetings at the octagonal deck on the sand. It's a marvelous place to be.

But my book is going more slowly than I anticipated and I have a DEADLINE. OK, I will say it out loud: my book is going to be written, edited and printed by my birthday, April 29, 2011. OMG! Are you kidding me?

The more I write, the more I need to write. I worked with Judith Kohlberg for a weekend and she encouraged me to drop out a lot of stuff I thought was important ("You have other books to write. Save something for them," she told me). But I am adding that stuff back in. It IS important. And I want this book to be rich and full of tidbits and anecdotes about life in the non-linear lane.

Here I am sitting at my brought-from-home desk with adjustable tables all around me. It's an amazing view. I wish I had more time (don't I ALWAYS Wish I had more time?) but I promise you this: the book WILL be done. DONE, do you hear me? DONE. By my birthday.

So I'd better write…see you later..and keep WRITING!!

ADHD and migraines

Got migraines? Me, too.

Got ADHD? Me, too.

And now we know the two may be related! A new study released in December 2010 shows a link between migraine headaches and adult ADHD. The Journal of Attention Disorders (http://jad NULL.sagepub NULL.com/content/early/2010/10/31/1087054710385784 NULL.abstract?papetoc) published a study based on Norwegian prescription histories of patients with ADHD and migraines. The researchers found a significant overlap between the two, leading to the conclusion that there may be a link between ADHD and increased migraine headaches.

The implications aren't fully understood (that's the case with most recently published data) but it could explain a lot of headaches associated with ADHD. I guess the question really is: what came first, the headache or the ADHD that CAUSED the migraine??

Organize those pills!

The last two trips I have taken out of town, I have forgotten to pack my vitamins. Buying two more sets was EXPENSIVE (especially the fish oil).

I need a better plan for my trip to Illinois to visit my parents. I checked online for a vitamin organizer and found several promising ones on Amazon but then Googled again and found a bonanza of pill organizers! Check it out at Forgetting The Pill (http://www NULL.forgettingthepill NULL.com/organizers NULL.html).

These guys have every kind, shape and size of pill organizer in the world, I think.

Plus they have alarms so you remember to take your meds/vitamins (http://www NULL.forgettingthepill NULL.com/timers NULL.html) etc. Pretty darned cool – some will even speak to you or ring a LOUD alarm (http://www NULL.forgettingthepill NULL.com/cgi-bin/ForgettingThePill/order NULL.cgi?orderone++Timers+1+218+1).

You gotta love the web – it's better than shopping in New York City – open 24/7 with every variety and variation of almost anything you'd ever want!

Hugs

Linda

PS– don't forget – store that fish oil in the refrigerator or freezer after you open the package!
